March brings fresh energy across DH8. The days are getting longer, plans are taking shape, and once again this issue is filled with people who quietly make a real difference in our communities.

From Marjorie Gray still dancing and volunteering at 98, to Gemma Ferguson celebrating 20 years at Greencroft Bottling, there is a clear theme running through these pages: dedication. Dedication to work, to neighbours, to independent businesses and to causes that strengthen the place we call home.

We celebrate that independent spirit in shops like Lanchester Hardware and Those Who Wander, and in welcoming spaces such as Willow Burn Hospice and the British Red Cross. We also look back at our rich history, with the story of the Shotley Bridge sword makers reminding us that innovation and craftsmanship have long been part of this area’s identity.

This month also marks something genuinely exciting. The launch of firefly.ad, our new local news web app, opens the door wider than ever for community voices to be heard. It creates a clear, simple route from idea to publication, giving local people the chance to share news, celebrate achievements, highlight issues and tell the stories that matter most to them.

What begins in Consett can now travel far beyond it, reaching readers across a growing network of local magazines nationwide. A single story can spark conversation, inspire action, or connect communities who may never otherwise have crossed paths. That is the power of modern local journalism when it is rooted in real places and real people. At its heart, firefly.ad is built on a straightforward belief: the strongest stories come from within the community itself.

Alongside celebration, there are important conversations too. Strong communities are shaped not only by good news, but by engagement, discussion and shared responsibility. When people take part, speak up and support one another, places grow stronger.

Thank you for reading Issue 160 of the Consett Magazine, supporting local businesses, sharing your stories and continuing to champion positive local news!

Warm wishes,
Barry Kirkham, on behalf of Firefly, Consett Magazine, and all our amazing advertisers and contributors
