Two local councillors have taken part in a national sleep-out event to raise awareness and funds for homeless veterans.
Councillor Jackie Teasdale, Vice Chair of Durham County Council, and Councillor Kenny Hope, a military veteran, joined The Great Tommy Sleep Out in support of the Royal British Veterans Enterprise (RBVE).
Representing the Delves Lane Division in Consett, they were joined by fellow veterans Dave Mitchell, formerly of the Parachute Regiment, and Fusilier Billy Todd. Together, the group helped highlight the challenges faced by many former service personnel after leaving the armed forces.
The campaign supports veterans transitioning into civilian life, offering help with housing, employment, and other key areas. Between them, the four participants raised around £1,200.
“It is a real shame that, for too long, many of our armed forces veterans have not received the level of support they deserve after leaving service. Taking part in the Sleep Out was an important way to stand in solidarity and raise awareness of the help available.”

Both councillors expressed their thanks to everyone who supported the initiative—whether through donations, sharing information, or helping spread the word during the month-long campaign, which concluded with participants spending a night sleeping outdoors in March.
