Every village needs a proper fruit and veg shop — somewhere you can pop in for a single apple or something fresh for tonight’s tea (and not come out with three things you didn’t mean to buy!).

When Lanchester risked losing its greengrocer, Andy stepped in with his Mam and Aunty Wendy and took over in November 2022. Rebranded as Lanchester Country Basket, the family-run shop was given a fresh new look and a new lease of life.

Despite being new to retail, they were determined to keep this much-loved local service going. Today, Andy runs the shop with help from Pam and Ian, with Sue (Mam) and Aunty Wendy supporting — especially when it’s full-on flower season for Valentine’s and Mother’s Day!

Proudly local, the team stock fresh produce and a growing range of locally sourced dairy products, all served with friendly chat and a bit of banter.

Quality food, fair prices, and proper village service — just how it should be.

  1. Nightmare parking in lanchester. Been twice today to try and park to use local shops. Eventually got parked the second time but only had time to visit one shop. So many businesses must be losing trade due to the parking issues.
    I’ll try again tomorrow 🤞🏼

  2. Best fruit, veg and service I’ve ever known. Don’t need to travel from Consett twice a week to Country Baskets- now we are back in the village – I can come every day!! Top quality. 🥰

  3. We love all our fruit and vegetables we get at Country Basket and Andy is such a very lovely helpful man. We come from South Moor and definitely worth the journey.
