At Shotley Bridge Nursery School, mealtimes are far more than a pause in the day, they are a deeply valued and meaningful part of our curriculum.

Our approach draws inspiration from the practical life principles of Maria Montessori, particularly her emphasis on independence, real materials and grace and courtesy, alongside the Reggio Emilia approach, which views children as strong, capable and competent individuals within a respectful community.

By weaving these influences into our daily routines, we ensure that mealtimes become powerful opportunities for growth, connection and self-belief.

A Time for Connection and Learning

We intentionally structure our mealtimes to nurture:

  • Good manners and table etiquette
  • Respect for others
  • Patience and turn-taking
  • Meaningful conversation
  • A shared sense of community

Children sit together, talk, listen and learn that food is not only nourishment but also a social experience. These moments build language skills, confidence and a strong sense of belonging.

A Carefully Sequenced Approach to Independence

As children grow through the nursery, we gently introduce increasing levels of independence. Each child is supported to gradually:

  • Serve their own side dishes
  • Pour their own drinks
  • Manage portion sizes
  • Clear away leftovers
  • Take responsibility for their place at the table

From The Rivers onwards, children are thoughtfully introduced to genuine crockery and real glasses during main meals.

Why We Use Real, Authentic Resources

We understand that the use of breakable resources may raise questions for some parents and carers. However, our decision is intentional and grounded in research-informed pedagogy.

Using authentic crockery:

  • Develops fine motor control and coordination
  • Encourages careful handling and concentration
  • Teaches respect for materials
  • Introduces children to natural consequences in a safe, supported way
  • Builds confidence through trust and responsibility

When children are trusted with real objects, they often rise to that expectation. They begin to move more mindfully, demonstrating care, pride and growing independence.

Managing Risk with Care

The introduction of genuine crockery is never abrupt. It is:

  • Gradual
  • Closely supervised
  • Carefully risk-assessed
  • Adapted to each child’s developmental readiness

Some children embrace this responsibility quickly; others take a little more time and support. As with all aspects of our practice, our approach is responsive and tailored to individual needs.

Seeing Children as Capable

At the heart of our philosophy is a clear belief: children thrive when they are trusted and respected.

By embedding meaningful, real-life experiences into everyday routines, we nurture resilience, independence and self-esteem — qualities that extend well beyond the nursery years.

Mealtimes at Shotley Bridge Nursery School are not simply about eating. They are about community, confidence and cultivating life skills that will support children long into the future.
