Born in Leeds, Stuart Wright moved to the North East when his father became a Verger at Durham Cathedral. Now living in Hollinside, Stuart has enjoyed a lifelong passion for music alongside a long career in the funeral profession.
While still at school he began helping part-time at John Smurthwaite & Son Funeral Directors, later completing a full apprenticeship. Wanting to maintain the highest standards of care for families, Stuart founded his own funeral directing business in 1992 in Langley Park, later expanding to Gilesgate, Pelton and Pity Me.
Music has always remained central to Stuart’s life. He plays the organ and is also a keen church bell ringer, currently training at St Mary’s Church, Barnard Castle, which has a tower of eight bells. He also occasionally plays the organ at All Saints Church, Lanchester.
Around 15 years ago Stuart developed another musical passion — fairground organs. He now owns two remarkable instruments:
• A Grand Gavioli Fairground Organ built in France around 1902
• A 92-key Anton Pluer street organ built in the Netherlands
Using traditional perforated “book music,” these mechanical instruments can play everything from classical pieces to modern show tunes.
From playing piano at age six to performing at venues including Blackpool Tower Ballroom, Stuart’s life has been shaped by music, tradition, and dedication to his community.
