Consett Rallies Around George Stafford’s 100th Birthday Charity Walk

A much-loved Consett man is preparing to celebrate his 100th birthday by taking on a sponsored 1.5-mile walk in aid of St Cuthbert’s Hospice, with support pouring in from across the local community.

George Stafford turns 100 on 30 May and will take on the charity challenge on Wednesday 3 June at 10.30am, setting off from the Travellers Rest at the top of Delves Lane.

The fundraiser has been organised by George’s son, Gary Stafford, with money raised going to St Cuthbert’s Hospice in memory of Gary’s wife Judith, who died from cancer three years ago. Part of the fundraising will also support residents’ activities.

Gary said:

“My dad, George Stafford, is 100 on 30th May and on Wednesday 3rd June will be doing a sponsored walk from the Travellers Rest in Consett to Greenways Court in Delves Lane.

The money raised will be donated to St Cuthbert’s Hospice in Durham where my wife Judith died of cancer 3 years ago.

If you can help please give as generously as you can for a wonderful cause.”

George is a well-known figure in Consett, having worked as a teacher in the town for many years. Friends, former pupils and local residents have all been sharing messages of support ahead of the walk, with sponsorship forms circulating widely online and the GoFundMe appeal attracting generous donations.

Local schoolchildren are also expected to line the route and cheer George on as he begins the walk, adding to what is already shaping up to be a memorable community occasion.

Those closest to George say he continues to inspire people every day with his positive attitude, determination and encouragement of others. Plans are also in place throughout the week to celebrate his milestone birthday, including a special plant being placed outside his bedroom window in recognition of his love of gardening.

Speaking about the challenge, Tracy Graham, Wellbeing Co-ordinator at Greenways Court, said:

“We are absolutely thrilled to be supporting George in his sponsored walk. He is such a big character in the home, and it’s been amazing to see the local community get behind him. The encouragement from his son, local schools, and former pupils shows just how much George is thought of, and we couldn’t be prouder of him taking on this challenge.”

Tracy also thanked everyone who has supported George ahead of the event, saying the response from the community has left him emotional and overwhelmed by the kindness shown.

  1. Well done George. You were always such a kind, patient man who the pupils loved. Have a very happy Birthday. I also remember your brother who worked at Consett Technical College.

    • Dorothy Whitesmith, you, Mr Stafford, Mrs Bartrum and Mrs Elliot came out top of my all time favourite teacher’s at Moorside. They don’t make them like yous any more! 💕
