At Shotley Bridge Nursery school, learning does not begin with a plan or a prescribe general topic, it begins with wonder.

Each day, the natural world offers something new. A change in the weather, a fallen leaf, the movement of clouds, or the quiet appearance of a minibeast beneath a stone. These moments are not planned, yet they are rich with possibility. It is here that our children’s curiosity is sparked and their learning begins.

We do not follow a fixed agenda. Instead, we create an enabling environment where children feel free to explore, question, and lead their own discoveries. Their interests guide us. Their fascinations can often shape the direction of our days.

As practitioners, we see ourselves as co-learners. We listen closely, we notice deeply, and we respond thoughtfully, supporting children as they build on their ideas and make sense of the world around them. Through shared conversations and meaningful experiences, children begin to develop the language they need to express what they see, think, and feel.

The natural world plays a central role in this journey. It is ever-changing, offering daily opportunities to notice difference, change, and continuity. Children experience the rhythm of time in real and visible ways, what the outdoor environment and surrounding areas of the nursery looked like yesterday, what has changed today, and what might happen next. Through these lived experiences, they begin to form their understanding of past, present, and future.

In caring for plants, observing animals, and exploring the environment around them, children also develop a growing awareness of living things. They learn that the world is not stationary, but alive, constantly evolving, responding, and adapting.

Our role is not to direct this learning, but to nurture it. We provide the space, the time, and the language that allow children’s ideas to flourish. Together, we celebrate the questions as much as the answers, knowing that it is through curiosity that deep and meaningful learning takes place.

Here at Shotley Bridge Nursery school we strive to honour, recognise and share those all-important magical moments both big and small, which capture and directs our approach to learning. The window into the everyday experiences that shape our pedagogy, our values, and our deep respect for childhood and the rich experiences of Nature.

Recognising our responsibility to not just about what children learn, how they come to see the world:

With curiosity.

With care.

With wonder.
