From humble beginnings as Lanchester’s “Tin Church” in 1901 to the beautiful building that stands today, All Saints Church has been at the heart of the community for more than a century.
Opened in 1926 and built with the help of local miners and craftsmen, the church remains a testament to the faith, generosity and dedication of generations of parishioners.
Rev. Fr. Vernatius Edih, Parish Priest of All Saints RC Church, Lanchester, and St Teresa’s RC Church, Annfield Plain, was born in Nigeria and ordained to the priesthood in 2006 for the Diocese of Orlu. With extensive experience as both a parish priest and school principal, Fr. Vernatius arrived in the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle in January 2025.
He is assisted by Deacon Peter Smith, who was ordained in 2018. Peter carries out this voluntary role supporting parishioners, care home residents and hospice patients across the area whilst also juggling responsibilities of looking after his three grandchildren.
They serve the local parish communities, bringing a wealth of pastoral experience and a deep commitment to their faith and ministry, and make a real difference to parish and community life.
