A Poem about Consett Steelworks

The Steal Town

The cooling towers of the searing steel works

Stood sentinel at the foot of the town

Impregnated colossal furnaces spuming red dust,

The red dust and once sooted beaches, blacked by coal dust,

Falling as bloody snow filled with iron

Rusting the streets to a Martian landscape.

The wild west of Durham laid out in the wilderness,

A town fuelled by coal, built of iron works to steel,

A life service for workers in the company of Consett,

Before the desolation of the tumbling towers brought it all down,

Leaving a ghost town of lost souls walking dead to the dole.
