At 10am this morning, former Newcastle United manager and England central defender Jack Charlton was in Consett centre this morning to open the new YMCA shop which Jack Charlton 7 Consettis located in Middle Street. The new store in Middle Street will be helping to raise money for the local area through selling bric-a-brac and other items from the new and improved store located where Curry’s used to sit.

The shutters came up at 5 to 10 to reveal red paper across the door and a football waiting for the impending arrival. 15 year old photographer Nathan Colquhoun was there to get some great snaps of the England legend and former Northern Ireland manager as he went to open the new store. Around 30 people turned up this morning to catch a glimpse of the football star and see this new and exciting era of Consett’s YMCA store. Kicking a ball through the paper, Charlton officially opened the store in front of the excited audience.

Whilst some celebrities have little regard for their fans and admirers, Jack Charlton was ever the gentleman signing shirts and autograph books for the many people who turned out. It’s not very often that a World Cup winner makes their way to Consett let alone an English winner. His 1966 win will be forever written in the history books and the young and old of Consett were out to say hello to the three lions legend. You would think at 78 years old Jack would be settling down but it is extremely admirable he is still actively engaged with helping the community in the North East.

Here we have a gallery of the day’s events showing everything which went on courtesy of 15 year old Nathan Colquhoun. Thank you for your amazing pictures of the event.
