The football season is now over for our north east football teams.

Newcastle United

It’s been a season of ups and downs for Newcastle United this season, and for north east football as a whole, the club only made 1 signing in the summer, QPR striker Loic Remy secured a loan deal with Newcastle until the end of the season. The french international scored 14 goals in 26 appearances for the Magpies, making him the top goalscorer at the club this season.

Newcastle will be hoping to secure a permanent deal for Remy this summer but the player himself has indicated he wants to play for a champions league club and has all but ruled himself out of a permanent deal with the club.

Newcastle have had a season of two halves, the first half of the season the magpies got a memorable win at Old Trafford beating the red devils 1-0 from a Yohan Cabaye strike, then for Newcastle to sell the Frenchman in January north east football
to PSG. The sale of Cabaye was not only a massive loss to the team but he was a massive loss to the fans, Cabaye was a big fans favourite.

Newcastle had a very poor second half of the season and they were hoping to finish on a high against Liverpool who themselves were hoping to win the league, Newcastle knew they were in for a tough afternoon, they knew if Liverpool won and if Manchester City were beaten by Westham then Liverpool would be crowned champions.

Newcastle got off to a dream start when Yoan Gouffran’s cross was turned into his own net by defender Martin Skrtel, Newcastle had a great chance to double the lead when Yoan Gouffran went one on one with Simon Mignolet, the former Sunderland goalkeeper kept Liverpool in the game by making a fantastic save. The second half liverpool came out the blocks and their pressure finally paid off when Daniel Agger converted Steven Gerrard’s free kick to equalise and 2 mins later Liverpool were ahead with a similar free kick from Gerrard but this time Daniel Sturridge was on the end of it.

Things went from bad to worse for Newcastle when Shola ameobi got two yellow cards in the space of 10 seconds for dissent, things got even worse when Paul Dummet harshly received a straight red card for a challenge on Luis Suarez.

The season is over for Newcastle United and the fans will now be hoping for a good summer and to recruit some players that will push them on next season.

Sunderland

Sunderland fans will be relieved to be in the premier league next season, they got off to a really bad start collecting 1 point from 9 games which cost manager Paulo Di Canio his job, Sunderland replaced Paulo Di canio with former Brighton Manager Gus Poyet, his first game in charge was a heavy 4-0 defeat to Swansea at the Liberty Stadium.

Gus knew he had a big job on his hands if he was to turn Sunderland’s fortunes around, not unlike the rest of north east football, his first home game in charge was against Newcastle United and Sunderland were looking for their first 3 points in the league this season.

Goals from Steven Fletcher and Fabio Borini secured a 2-1 win and Sunderland’s first win of the season and took them off the bottom of the premier league.

Sunderland went to St James Park in February and done the double over  their rivals by beating them 3-0, something they haven’t done for 47 years.

Sunderland finished the season on a high picking up 13 points from their last 6 games to keep them in the premier league, a month ago everyone was writing them off and none thought they would stay up but they have done it and have done it in style.

They picked up wins at Stamford bridge, Old Trafford and they got a draw at the Etihad stadium with Manchester City getting a late equaliser to stop Sunderland from taking 3 points.

I think sunderland fans will be happy to end the season on a high and they will be hoping for a good summer adding to their squad and for a better season next year.

Gateshead

It’s been a terrific season for Gateshead they finished third in the Conference which means they are in the playoffs; they played Grimsby Town in the play off semi final, drew 1-1 away in the first leg and they won 3-1 at home in the second leg. Gateshead will also play Cambridge United in the final for a chance to be promoted into the football league and are already going to wembley on the 18th May which is a massive occasion for the club and fans.

Good luck to Gateshead!
