Consett, County Durham, is seeing a welcome wave of new businesses as two independent retailers open their doors in a growing residential community. Known historically for its steelworks, the town is now building a future rooted in local enterprise and neighbourhood spirit.
New Businesses Join a Thriving Hub
Billet Mill Convenience Store and Sweet Things Café are the latest additions to a set of purpose-built retail units designed to support small businesses in the heart of Consett. They join Social Butterflies – a play café for young children – and Velo Electric, a specialist electric bike shop, forming a lively mix of local services.
The retail units were delivered as part of the Regents Park development by Amethyst Homes, with the aim of creating opportunities for entrepreneurs within the community.
Everyday Essentials, Locally Delivered
Billet Mill Convenience Store is managed by local resident Sivakumar Thangavel, who employs four members of staff from the area. The shop offers a wide range of groceries, alongside PayPoint services, parcel collection, and the National Lottery – all under one roof.
“As a resident in the neighbouring estate I chose this location because the store is so visible and accessible, with ample car parking space and a dedicated loading bay,” Sivakumar explained.
“We are confident that we can complement the range of retail services in the area and become a competitively priced, convenience shop tailored to the local community’s needs.”
A Sweet Spot for Coffee and Cake
Sweet Things Café has relocated to the development after outgrowing its original premises. Run by Katie Peters, the café is staffed by a team of ten and serves breakfast, lunch, homemade pancakes, cakes, and a variety of drinks – all available to eat in or take away.
“We live on the estate and came across the buildings when out walking our dog,” said Katie.
“We thought what a perfect place for our café to move to… The café offers gorgeous views, ample parking, and a beautiful outdoor eating area.”
Space to Play and Stay
Social Butterflies is a purpose-built play café designed for babies and children up to age six. Owners Stephanie Whitaker and Helen O’Connor have created a space that welcomes families for play sessions, events, and birthday parties.
“Regents Court has been a dream location for our children’s play café,” said Stephanie and Helen.
“Perfectly placed in the middle of a large housing estate filled with wonderful families… The large, free car park is a fantastic addition and certainly appreciated by our customers who attend with their babies.”
Powered by the North Pennines
Velo Electric, formerly Ride Electric Durham, is well placed for cycling enthusiasts from across the region. Owner Richard Boulger noted that the shop’s location offers direct access to the popular C2C cycle route and nearby North Pennines.
“Regents Court is the ideal location for Velo Electric as our customers travel from throughout the North East,” said Richard.
“An added bonus is being situated on the edge of the stunning North Pennines and alongside the famous ‘C2C’ cycle route which offers great opportunities for trying or hiring an eBike.”
