Rockstar Games’ new Grand Theft Auto VI preview recorded 31.1 million Netflix views in just four days, making it the platform’s most-watched title that week. But one of its most unexpected moments has a remarkable connection to Consett and nearby Langley Park.
At around 10 minutes and 42 seconds into Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, the glossy images of fictional Leonida are accompanied by a very familiar County Durham sound: Prefab Sprout’s 1988 single Cars and Girls.
For millions of viewers it is simply another inspired Rockstar music choice. For people around Consett, it opens the door to a much richer local story involving parish-hall gigs, an old rectory, one of Britain’s finest songwriters and a playful disagreement with Bruce Springsteen about what cars can really tell us about life.
From Langley Park to Vice City
Prefab Sprout began in Witton Gilbert, where brothers Paddy and Martin McAloon rehearsed with drummer Michael Salmon at their father’s petrol station. Before the band became one of the most admired British groups of the 1980s, they were playing small venues close to home.
The surviving gig history lists two early Prefab Sprout appearances at St Joseph’s Parish Hall in Langley Park, on 6 September and 6 December 1980. A recording of the September concert survives, preserving a 23-song set from the band’s early days. According to the Prefab Sprout archive Sproutology, the tape was later circulated alongside demos sent to record companies.
That makes Langley Park much more than a name on an album sleeve. It was part of the band’s real early landscape, years before the world heard Cars and Girls, When Love Breaks Down and The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
The village would later travel around the world in the title of Prefab Sprout’s 1988 album, From Langley Park to Memphis. The title reaches from a County Durham village towards the American mythology of Elvis Presley’s Memphis. Now, nearly four decades later, one of that album’s best-loved songs has carried the same journey into the sunlit streets of GTA VI.
The real Consett connection
The best-documented local concerts were in nearby Langley Park rather than Consett itself, but Consett became an important part of Prefab Sprout’s creative story.
Producer Thomas Dolby recalled travelling north after hearing the band on BBC Radio 1. Their manager took him to the band’s old rectory in Consett, where Paddy McAloon played song after song on guitar. Dolby recorded roughly 40 of them and reduced the collection to 12 for Steve McQueen, the 1985 album that established Prefab Sprout as major critical favourites.
Another of the band’s classics, When Love Breaks Down, was written by McAloon in a single night in his front room in Consett, with guitar and synthesiser close at hand.
Consett’s own music culture was recording the rise too. A 1984 issue of Consett Music Project carried an interview with former drummer Steve Dolder about the band’s early development and live work.
So the Consett link is not a convenient modern invention. It belongs to the rooms where songs were written, played and selected before Prefab Sprout reached a worldwide audience.
Paddy McAloon’s clever answer to Bruce Springsteen
There is one final twist that makes Rockstar’s choice of Cars and Girls particularly smart.
Paddy McAloon explained that the song was a humorous, English response to the cars, highways and journeys that run through so much American pop music, especially the songs of Bruce Springsteen. McAloon admired Springsteen, including Born to Run, but questioned whether the romance of the open road was big enough to express all the sadness and complexity of real life.
In other words, Bruce had the highway, the engine and the dream of escape. Paddy looked out from County Durham and suggested that life could hurt far more than cars and girls.
That is why the song’s appearance in Grand Theft Auto feels almost too perfect. A record that gently challenged rock music’s obsession with cars has now turned up in the world’s most famous game about driving them.
Is it confirmed for the final GTA VI soundtrack?
Not yet. Cars and Girls is definitely heard in Rockstar’s official GTA VI extended preview, but Rockstar has not confirmed that every song used in the film will appear on an in-game radio station or the final soundtrack.
What is confirmed is that GTA VI is due on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November 2026. Long before the game arrives, Rockstar’s preview has already put a County Durham classic in front of one of the biggest entertainment audiences in the world.
Prefab Sprout’s connection to the Grand Theft Auto series extends beyond the recent preview, as their track “When Love Breaks Down” was previously featured on Vice City FM in the 2009 expansion The Ballad of Gay Tony.
Planning to play Grand Theft Auto VI?
GTA VI is available to pre-order for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S ahead of its 19 November 2026 release.
