An estimated £500,000 new assisted living scheme has just recently been opened in Consett. Number 64 Durham Road – which has been empty for 2 years now – has had a total revamp. The building having stood there for quite a while, needed significant refurbishment. The approximate price given in a contract by North East builder Turney Wylede Construction was £420,000. To help towards the project the Homes and Communities Agency presented £200,000 to Four Housing.
This gave Four Housing the potential to convert 64 Durham Road, into six-one bedroomed apartments, one of these being accessable for wheelchairs. These also have a fully fitted kitchens and a suitable dining area – as well as office space for staff members.
Residents will have full support in areas including money management and budgeting, confidence building, also the choice of vocational or educational training. The cheif Exectutive of the project said he was very pleased to be able offer this supported housing scheme to some residents, that may need more support given to them than other customers. The MP of North West Durham added to this and said that it was an honour to be apart of this facility.
64 Durham Road will give people a real opportunity to try and get to where they want to be in life. The residents will get help from trained professionals to help them gain the confidence back and live as an independant individual again.
This will most benefit people that have physical or learning disabilities, people who have been homeless, have mental health needs, youngsters or people escaping domestic abuse – Four Housing offer a number of complex needs – the 64 Durham Road housing scheme could also support people in need of help like this.
