Picture this: It’s a dreary February morning in Britain, the kind where the sky looks like it’s been painted with dishwater. I’m trudging through the slush, cursing the very existence of this godforsaken month, when my mobile pings. It’s a reminder about some obscure national day. Brilliant. Just what I needed to lift my spirits – another arbitrary reason to celebrate in the depths of winter.
But as it turns out, February isn’t just about Valentine’s Day and wondering why we bothered with New Year’s resolutions. Oh no, we’ve got a whole smorgasbord of “national days” to keep us entertained. Let’s dive into this carnival of questionable celebrations, shall we?
First up, on 7th February, we’ve got “Safer Internet Day.” Because apparently, in 2025, we still need reminding not to share our credit card details with that suspiciously generous prince from a country we can’t pronounce. It’s like having a “Don’t Lick Frozen Lampposts Day” – if you need telling, you’re probably beyond help.
Then on 11th February, we’re graced with the “International Day of Women and Girls in Science.” Now, this one I can get behind. It’s about time we recognised that women can do more than just make sandwiches and look pretty. They can also split atoms and cure diseases. Who knew? Maybe if we’d let them into labs earlier, we’d have flying cars by now instead of just faster ways to order a takeaway.
And just when you thought February couldn’t get any more thrilling, along comes “National Walking the Dog Day” on the 22nd. Fantastic. As if dog owners needed another excuse to let their furry friends redecorate our pavements. I can see it now – hordes of people dragging their reluctant pooches through the sleet and rain, all in the name of national pride. Because nothing says “I love my country” like picking up steaming piles of dog mess in the middle of winter.
But here’s the rub – as ridiculous as these “days” might seem, they’re not entirely pointless. Safer Internet Day might just stop your gran from wiring her life savings to a “handsome American soldier” she met online. The women in science day might inspire the next Marie Curie. And walking the dog? Well, it might be the only exercise some of you get all year.
So there you have it. February in the UK – a month where we celebrate not being complete idiots online, women being clever, and dogs doing what dogs do best. It’s not exactly the stuff of Shakespearean sonnets, but it’s what we’ve got. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to celebrate “Pretend This Month Doesn’t Exist Day” – it runs from 1st February to 28th, and it’s my personal favourite.
