Land remediation began on Monday 7 September, after the Trust completed its final contractual arrangements with the developer.
Work has started on the site of the new Shotley Bridge Hospital in Consett. Preparing the ground for construction is expected to take up to twelve months.
Alongside the site work, County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust is developing its Final Business Case, due to be submitted to NHS England in early 2027. Subject to final approvals, construction of the hospital itself is expected to begin in mid-2027.
Starting work on site is an important milestone for the new Shotley Bridge Hospital and a visible sign of the progress being made towards delivering this investment for our communities.
Matt Graham, Acting Chief Operating Officer, County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust
“Today’s work marks the beginning of preparing the site for construction and follows years of planning and development,” Mr Graham said. “While there are still approvals to be secured, we remain on track and continue to work closely with our partners to move the project forward.”
The Trust says the new hospital will bring together a range of healthcare services in a purpose-built setting, designed to serve communities across North West Durham for generations to come.
Many readers have been in touch about healthcare in the community and the services available locally. Consett Magazine will keep readers up to date on the project’s progress as each milestone is reached.
