Home

A cigarette to warm the chill

Against the grey morning sky,

Leaning on the back gate

Dreaming up to the rooftops,

Chimneys puffing like old lungs

Against the northern air,

Pigeons circling from a nearby cree

Echoes of men singing down the lane,

The knocker upper tapping on windows

To shake men from their beds,

Women scrubbing doorsteps

Baking bread,

Mam yelling from the kitchen

Another day at home yawns ahead.
