How to learn to drive on the clutch and not glitch on every hill?

Travelling the UK and its provinces is a real treat for the soul. Incredible landscapes, local flavour and incredible architecture are the reason to travel to the country.

However, we should not forget that travelling by car has its own nuances and peculiarities. If we talk about Great Britain, it is worth remembering that there are more than 50 thousand kilometres of unpaved roads in the country. The relief of the country consists mainly of hilly plains. However, in the north there is the North Scottish Highlands. Accordingly, you should be prepared for the fact that you will often have to climb up and down the mountain. How to overcome this and not to throttle under each slide? That’s what we’re going to talk about today.

How do I use a manual gearbox to start up a hill?

The first question novice drivers ask is: ‘Should I start with or without the handbrake? Older cars were equipped with a less reliable clutch, which is why they used a handbrake to hold the car in place. Today, you can use the pedals exclusively. However, it’s important to have a fully functioning clutch here. Here’s an illustrative example: your clutch master cylinder fails. The clutch master cylinder looks like a brake master cylinder. It also uses brake fluid to operate. When there is a problem with the clutch master cylinder, it can cause problems with the clutch pedal and gear shifting. Accordingly, making sure the clutch is in good working order is the first rule of thumb before travelling.

How to start without handbrake on a hill and not stall? There is a fairly simple mechanism:

  • Step 1: Right foot on the brake, neutral gear engaged.
  • Step 2: Depress the clutch, engage first gear, right foot continues to hold the brake pedal.
  • Step 3: Slowly release the clutch until the car starts to grab traction with the wheels (this is accompanied by a strong vibration of the car and jerking of the tachometer arrow).
  • Step 4: Press the accelerator pedal while releasing the brake pedal. Press the accelerator pedal harder and help the car drive.

Pros and cons of ‘clutch driving’

The first question is, ‘What is clutch riding for and what is it?’ So, this ride involves driving with the clutch pedal constantly depressed. In such driving there is no connection between the engine and the wheels. Why do you need the skill to drive a car in this way? It can come in handy when the driver cannot assess the situation in advance.

Thus, when the driver does not understand what he should do in the future (to stop or to continue driving), the method of clamped clutch is used, which allows to gain time to make a decision. For example, when travelling up a hill on relatively off-road terrain, the car is often travelling in second gear. In order to smoothly reduce speed after a hill without changing gear, you can use the depressed clutch method. This will allow you to assess the situation after a hill with limited visibility and continue driving safely. However, do not use this method too much, as it will shorten the service life of clutch components such as clutch release bearing, clutch fork and clutch master cylinder.
