Thirty years ago, Roz and Chris transformed a concrete parking yard and field on the outskirts of Lanchester into the beautiful garden it is today.
With years of hard work, knowledge and passion, they’ve created a stunning natural landscape full of winding paths and beautiful planting.
From concrete to countryside
When Roz and Chris first arrived there was no soil, just concrete and a tarmac field. The site was overgrown, a little bleak and little shape to it. What followed was a decades-long journey of vision and determination. Paths were carved out, beds created and planted, and layer by layer the garden evolved into the tranquil, colourful space it is today – a sanctuary for wildlife and for all who visit.
A passion for plants
Roz’s love of plants is deep, particularly when it comes to rare and unusual shrubs. Over the years she has developed a knowledge, and built the networks, that make the garden ever-changing and beautiful. It is a garden that runs through patience, curiosity and a deep respect for nature – naturalistic planting, winding paths and seating areas that reflect the garden’s seasonal colour.
The National Collection
Roz is also the proud holder of the UK’s National Collection of Physocarpus (ninebark), helping to conserve these wonderful shrubs through her work with Plant Heritage. A diverse and beautiful genus of ornamental shrubs, Physocarpus is known for its colourful foliage, delicate flowers and year-round interest.
- Recognised by Plant Heritage – Roz is the proud holder of the UK’s National Collection of Physocarpus.
- Plants supplied to RHS Bridgewater – plants from the collection have been supplied to RHS Garden Bridgewater.
- Collection on display at Ushaw – part of the collection can also be seen at Ushaw, where it can be enjoyed by visitors and fellow gardeners.
