Ian is Leadgate’s dedicated Council Lengthman, or street cleaner, and has been keeping the village tidy for nearly 20 years. Born and bred in Leadgate, he still lives in the squares and, unlike most Durham County Council lengthmen, actually works from home.

Ian started as a volunteer, picking up litter during his daily walks. After a few years, a local councillor noticed and arranged for him to get a high-vis coat and a pair of litter-picking grabbers. Soon after, the council officially hired him, and he’s been on the job ever since.
Come rain or shine, Ian can be spotted at every corner of the village, diligently following his set routes. His work ethic makes him one of the council’s most reliable employees.

Ian has a genuine dislike for litter and those who drop it. He cares deeply for Leadgate and takes immense pride in ensuring the village looks its best every day.
