In response to the pressing need for substantial upgrades at Shotley Bridge Hospital, health officials have made the decision to move forward with plans for a new medical facility, which will be located across from the Tesco on Genesis Way in Consett, County Durham.

The hospital will be called Shotley Bridge Community Hospital, but will be located in Consett Town Centre.

The proposal for this facility is extensive, and it includes a 16-bed in-patient rehabilitation ward, an urgent treatment centre, an expanded chemotherapy suite, and diagnostic provisions. This move is expected to greatly improve the medical resources available to the community.

Richard Holden MP for North West Durham said:

“Reversing the decades of decline of healthcare services in North West Durham has been my top local priority. The Council granting planning permission is another good step in the right direction.

“At every stage I have been pushing the project forward at both a local and national level and I look forward to the business case being submitted for final sign off from the Department of Health and Social Care in the coming months.

“More importantly, I look forward to seeing the sizeable impact this hospital will have on our local towns and villages and see that levelling-up in local healthcare provision with a new community hospital.”

On Tuesday 7th March 2023, the efforts to replace the outdated Shotley Bridge Hospital have taken a notable stride forward, as Durham County Council’s planning committee has given their approval for the project.

This crucial development brings the new hospital one step closer to fruition, and it marks a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to improve the medical resources available to the community.
