Consett Rotary hosted an presentation event at Consett Golf Club recently to celebrate three local students who were given a bursary by Dr Trudy Stewart to help with their further education.
Dr Stewart prior to going to university was helped by Stanley Rotary Club in her quest to obtain a degree, and ultimately a doctorate. Now as a distinguished expert on her field of speech therapy, she wished to help local students in a similar way. As the Rotary club in Stanley is no more, some members of Consett Rotary and Tom Kennedy – a former recipient of a Rotary scholarship – led by Brian Stobbs became the vehicle to channel the generous donation.
Local education establishments were approached and three students were chosen with the help of sixth form leaders and Rotarians Karen Brierley and Norman Sellar. The students share the bursary equally.
Keagan Shaw from New College Durham, studying Environmental Sciences, Sam Bush from St Bede’s Lanchester, studying History and Bethany Jackson from Derwentside College who is studying Artificial Intelligence, were presented with their awards.
Dr Stewart was taken by surprise at the end of the presentation when President Rob Grinter on behalf of Consett Rotary Club, presented her with a Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship Award for her munificent contribution in helping others.
