Reminiscence
Who is the girl in the photograph?
She’s young and full of smiles.
There’s something familiar about her,
Especially that hairstyle –
It’s straight out of the seventies,
And so are her denim flares,
She’s balanced on her platform boots,
Yet totally unaware –
that the click on the Kodak camera,
That caught the moment in time,
Would over fifty years later,
Show her in her prime.
Her so much older self looks on,
Sees the girl in the image framed.
She doesn’t recognise herself,
For now so much has changed.
Time has taken that face away,
Age has caught up, and stayed,
Replacing the youthful smiley look,
With lines that do not fade.
her hair is grey and thinner,
She’s sporting flat comfortable shoes,
Wears varifocal spectacles,
And spends a lot of time at the loo.
Yet somehow she still feels the same,
Just an eighteen year old inside,
Her thoughts intact, but her shell is cracked,
Her years now clarified.
Who is the girl in the photograph?
The one with the smile in her eyes.
She looks again, then sees it.
It’s herself, there’s no disguise.
