At Shotley Bridge Nursery School, children’s wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. We believe the greatest gift we can give a child is a deep sense of security.

When children feel emotionally secure, they begin to build confidence in themselves, trust in those around them and the courage to explore, discover and flourish. For us, every transition, no matter how big or small, is an opportunity to strengthen that security, because when children feel secure, they thrive.

Every change matters, however small

Within this, mindfulness around transitions is fundamental. Transitions are often thought of as significant life events such as moving house or welcoming a new sibling, but in reality, they are any aspect of change within everyday life. Whilst many adults take these moments in their stride – the journey from home to work, visiting family or going to the shops – for young children, even the smallest change can have a significant impact on their emotional wellbeing and sense of security.

Research demonstrates a clear correlation between poorly managed transitions in childhood and later mental health challenges. As early years professionals, we recognise our responsibility to support children through these moments with care, consistency and understanding, helping them to build resilience through positive transitional experiences.

Whilst we are very proud of our child-led approach, naturally the nursery day includes predictable rhythms such as mealtimes, intimate care, group experiences and time outdoors. Practice around these routines is embedded across the setting, with clear expectations and consistency helping children to anticipate what is happening next and feel secure within the rhythm of their day.

Preparing for “big school”

We are currently in the midst of supporting children through one of the biggest transitions they will experience as they prepare to begin their primary school journey. What is often viewed as an exciting milestone can also be an emotionally challenging time. Whilst children hear conversations about “big school”, the uncertainty surrounding this new chapter can often present itself through changes in behaviour, heightened emotions or reluctance to separate from those closest to them.

Preparation for this important milestone begins long before the summer term. Throughout their nursery journey, we nurture the confidence, curiosity and independence that children need to embrace new experiences. As school approaches, we thoughtfully build upon these foundations through stories, discussions, transition activities and strong partnerships with our local primary schools, ensuring each child is recognised as the unique individual they are before they even step through their new classroom door.

Every child is supported to build confidence, curiosity and independence from their very first day with us until they spread their wings for their next adventure. These are the foundations that help children develop resilience, adapt to change and approach new experiences with self-assurance.

Whilst saying goodbye is always emotional for us as practitioners, it is also an enormous privilege. Watching children leave us with confidence in themselves, trust in others and excitement for what lies ahead reminds us why transitions matter so much.

We recognise that it is not simply the transition itself that matters, but how the child experiences it. By slowing the pace, preparing children thoughtfully and responding to their individual needs, we help them navigate change with confidence rather than uncertainty. These everyday moments become the building blocks for resilience, emotional wellbeing and lifelong learning.

At Shotley Bridge Nursery School, we know we are not simply preparing children for school, we are helping to prepare them for life, one secure step at a time.
