For over eight decades, Vera Parnaby has been a pillar of support for the Royal British Legion (RBL), earning her the affectionate title “Mrs. Poppy” in her hometown of Leadgate. Her remarkable journey of service has seen her raise over £1 million, making her one of the UK’s longest-serving poppy sellers.
Vera’s dedication to the RBL is deeply personal, rooted in the tragic loss of her father, George, during World War Two. Her involvement began in 1945 when her mother, Elizabeth, a young war widow, took six-year-old Vera to an RBL Christmas party. The following year, Elizabeth helped establish the women’s section of the RBL in Consett, involving Vera and her siblings in every aspect of the organisation.
At 14, Vera officially became a poppy seller, and her commitment only grew from there. For the past 29 years, she has been the driving force behind the Consett Poppy Appeal, organising the annual fundraising effort with unwavering passion.
Vera’s tireless work has not gone unnoticed. She has received numerous accolades, including the Hero of Derwentside award, the Durham County Council Chairman’s Medal, and a Points of Light award presented by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. In 2022, she was honoured to carry the Queen’s Baton through Sunderland ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
As Vera approaches her ninth decade of service, her story stands as a powerful testament to the impact one individual can have on their community. Her lifelong dedication to the Royal British Legion exemplifies the enduring spirit of service and remembrance that continues to inspire generations in Leadgate and beyond.
