Meet Richard Judd — a walker, history buff, and passionate community member who’s made Leadgate his home. Originally from the sunny South Coast, Richard traded beach walks for countryside rambles when he moved to the North East over a decade ago.
The Man Behind the Walking Group
In 2016, Richard launched a Saturday walking group in Leadgate that now draws around 20 regulars each week. Some come for the fresh air and fitness, but many come simply to chat, connect, and enjoy the company.
When the evenings grow longer, Richard also runs a laid-back summer stroll, perfect for those who like to pair their walking with a bit of golden-hour sunshine.
“It’s not just about steps,” he says. “It’s about smiles, stories, and showing up for each other.”
Walking for Wellbeing
Richard believes walking is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to improve mental and physical wellbeing — especially when done as a group. Over the years, his walks have become a lifeline for many locals, offering structure, social time, and a reason to leave the house.
He’s known for his easygoing nature, friendly conversation, and love of discovering little gems along the route — from tucked-away trails to forgotten landmarks.
A Passion for Local History
When he’s not out exploring the paths and lanes of Consett, Richard is just as active behind the scenes — especially in the world of local history. He helps run the History of the Consett Steelworks Facebook group, where he regularly shares fascinating facts, rare images, and local stories that connect the community to its rich industrial past.
Whether it’s a photo of a long-lost blast furnace or a childhood memory shared by a resident, Richard’s passion helps keep the area’s heritage alive and well.
Serving the Community with the Consett Lions
In 2024, Richard added another role to his growing list of community contributions by joining the Consett Lions. He now serves as the group’s secretary, supporting a wide range of charitable causes including:
- The Great North Air Ambulance
- Marie Curie
- Local grassroots football teams
- Eye care charities that recycle used glasses for people in Africa
Through their efforts, the Lions are helping to make a difference — both locally and globally — and Richard is proud to be part of it.
