Gary Holiday: Preserving Durham Cathedral’s Heritage

Chris Bruce – Consett in Focus

Gary Holiday, a master stonemason from Benfieldside, leads a skilled team at Durham Cathedral dedicated to preserving its historic structure and surrounding buildings. Since beginning his career with his uncle’s company, Gary had long dreamed of working at the cathedral—a distinguished role for any craftsperson.

Gary’s responsibilities extend throughout the cathedral grounds, overseeing the restoration of workshops, houses, and ancient walls. As a Fellow of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, he ensures that each repair aligns with historic standards, from masonry details to wooden guttering crafted in the carpentry workshops.

Working in a former 12th-century monks’ brewhouse turned stonemason’s workshop, Gary’s work is deeply connected to history, grounding him in centuries-old craftsmanship. Beyond his work at the cathedral, Gary contributes to his local community through the Consett@Play Project, where he captures moments from Consett Rugby Club and Consett AFC Ladies, celebrating and preserving local life.

Gary’s dedication to both his craft and his community underscores his role as a true guardian of local heritage.
