As Christmas comes near, County Durham’s residents are being encouraged to check out the charms of local shops and services.

Small Business Saturday – 1st December 2018 – will see free parking across County Durham as part of a drive to encourage consumers to shop locally.

Small Business Saturday is part of a national campaign which urges people to support independent local businesses, both on that day and in the future. The campaign also seeks to inspire, support, celebrate and promote small local firms all through the year.

This Saturday, there will be free parking in all Durham County Council carparks from 10.00 am. There will also be free parking on the streets of Durham City throughout the day.

Local shops, small online companies, family businesses, business services, wholesalers and small manufacturers will all be taking part in the scheme, with many tempting the public with special offers and discounts.

Durham County Council’s cabinet member for economic regeneration, Cllr Carl Marshall, said, “Durham County Council is proud to be supporting this fantastic initiative once again.”

“Small businesses provide almost two-thirds of private sector employment here in County Durham and account for almost half of private sector turnover.”

“That’s why it’s so important for us to celebrate the valuable contribution that independent retailers make to the local economy, raising their profile, not just on Small Business Saturday, but all year round.”
