In just one year, a neglected pub in Consett has been lovingly transformed into a valuable asset for the community, bringing hope and opportunities to those who rely on its services.

The visionary behind this remarkable change is Nicola Jayne Little, the founder of the Mint Business Club. Her vision for the Braes Hotel in Consett has turned it into The HUB, Consett, a vibrant space offering a variety of facilities such as a shop, workshops, and office spaces. Moreover, it has become a thriving hub specifically catering to individuals with ADHD.

Since its opening, The HUB, Consett has seamlessly integrated into the local community, evoking fond memories among regular visitors who share stories of their past visits to the pub. Some families even discovered personal connections, as they owned and ran the establishment in the 1980s. Nostalgic photographs grace the walls, capturing the building’s rich history.

Originally known as the Commercial Hotel, the establishment played a significant role in the town’s heritage from 1837 to 1960. Later renamed the Braes Hotel, it has now been revitalized as The HUB. Notably, it was the first building in Consett to offer running water and provided accommodation for individuals associated with the Consett Steel Works.

Over the past year, The HUB, Consett has undergone an extensive renovation, with an investment of £50,000. Durham County Council played a crucial role in supporting the project by funding essential exterior upgrades, including new windows, render, paint, and guttering. A local artist named Jordan Stead has also contributed a captivating mural on the shutter, depicting the building’s appearance in the 1900s.

Today, the building serves both the community and the business sector under the umbrella of Celebrate Difference Ltd, a social enterprise. The top floor, previously used as a flat and office space, has been thoughtfully redesigned to accommodate five offices, a training suite, a media room, a small private meeting room, and a well-appointed kitchen and bathroom.

The success of Celebrate Difference and The HUB has not gone unnoticed by influential figures. Dr. Tony Lloyd from the ADHD Foundation, impressed by the news, visited the premises and engaged with the 50 people in attendance, further cementing the positive impact being made.

“This was a tremendous event, and we were honoured that Dr Lloyd gave up his time to travel from Liverpool to talk to us. He told us about his work with the Government to address ADHD issues and it gave us all a lot of reassurance that we all have a voice,” said Nicola. “We’ve also hosted an event where local celebrity Alfie Joey delivered some training to our members which also helped to put our facilities on the map.”

The HUB, Consett has also fostered numerous partnerships with local businesses, which utilise the space on a weekly basis. Notable collaborators include Durham Enable, Durham Works, and Villa Real, a local special education needs school. In addition to providing valuable resources and opportunities, The HUB, Consett also welcomes the community for daily shopping experiences.
